All over town, wherever there are trees with low branches (and Seacouver is a place of a million postage-stamp sized parks, so trees are scattered all through town), there are bells. Little bells and bigger bells, store-bought and of random shapes and sizes and colors. They're tied loosely to branches with cheap ribbon. If someone wanted to cut one down to keep, most of them aren't too difficult to reach, but it would take a coordinated effort to get them all.

There may be no mummers today, but there will be bells, to turn winter's tide.

comments
