Longest night
Dec. 22nd, 2011 07:51 pmIt's a kind of being remembered.
Posted to Joe's Bar on LJ:
On the morning of the day of the longest night of the year, residents of Seacouver wake to a strange but subtle new development. All over town, wherever there are trees with low branches (and Seacouver is a place of a million postage-stamp sized parks, so trees are scattered all through town), there are bells. Little bells and bigger bells, store-bought and of random shapes and sizes and colors. They're tied loosely to branches with cheap ribbon. If someone wanted to cut one down to keep, most of them aren't too difficult to reach, but it would take a coordinated effort to get them all.
There may be no mummers today, but there will be bells, to turn winter's tide.

It wasn't difficult to grow flowers in her apartment, something which Lorelei greatly enjoyed; since she occupied a corner of the building she had more windows than most, giving her an excuse to almost never turn on an artificial light before sunset. It also enabled her to keep her favorite flowers--anemone coronaria--which she was currently planting in a window-box, outside near the sidewalk. Anyplace where she could spill dirt and it meant she didn't have to clean was a really good spot to her, and so she was sitting on the edge of a raised planter outside her building with a box, about a dozen red and white poppy-like flowers, and gardening supplies. Luckily anything grown in a window box didn't require much in the way of maintenance, and she hummed to herself under her breath, generally just enjoying the sun. She didn't mind getting dirt of her hands, and there was certainly quite a bit of that, and a smear of soil on her cheek from where she'd rubbed it absently.

Library work

It's good for an immortal, even one as deceptively youthful as Cavan, to have a regular day job. Not only does it keep them in touch with the mortal mentality, it also pays the bills. In between classes, Cavan works at the college library as a page. It's not especially glamorous (dealing with pull lists for the professors can in fact be a pain, when they find out some student has dared to check out a book they want), but it's a coveted job for anyone who likes to be around books. He's very good at his job, pleasant to the rest of the staff and patrons alike, and of course behind his back most of the women gossip about how absolutely adorable he is. Mostly adorable in a 'want to pinch his cheeks' kind of way. He hears them, and smiles, and is used to it. When no one is around he walks through the stacks and admires the books, and thinks of a time before books were known to the world at large, when everything that was known was passed along by word of mouth and rote memorization. He likes books, but they still seem somehow like cheating.
It's a slow day today, and there's nothing to do but a little shelving, so nobody else minds if he takes his time in the stacks putting away the books.

Walk in the park
Feb. 22nd, 2011 09:16 pmCopied from here
There's a lot of parks in Seacouver, from big long parks that follow the line of the waterfront to little postage-stamp sized parks scattered through residential areas. Some of the bigger ones, especially toward the edge of the city, have big rambling stretches of wooded areas with no more than dirt-packed foot trails through them, and lots of hidden places off that where only deer, bums, and the occasional teenagers explore.
It's this kind of area Cavan emerges from, well into dusk. He's got his big hiking backpack, a few bits of leaves on his clothes, and he's fiddling with a strange little object made of woven grass as he walks.

Morning grocery shopping!
Jan. 13th, 2011 08:59 pmCopied from here.
Moving can get a little old, when you've done it over and over for several millennium. Seacouver is a beautiful place, though, at least when it isn't raining, full of just slightly eccentric people and places, and fresh sea air, and mild temperatures.
It's a nice place for a fresh-faced young college student, just moved from halfway around the world. Gavin O'Shea will fit right in, with a fashion sense so out of date it's trendy again, and a way of thinking the local hippies would approve of. Today he's just a young man out grocery shopping, looking to stock up his new apartment's fridge with the basics. He cooks more and eats more vegetables than the average student, but the west coast is all about healthy and organic foods, right?
He lacks the 'trenchcoat brigade' look so many immortals favor, and instead he carries a long hiking backpack, the kind with a metal frame. It's too short to hold your average sword, anyway, and he's got it with him because he doesn't own a car and has to walk his groceries home. It's a good excuse.

Application/Profile
Jan. 9th, 2011 07:58 pmCharacter Name: Cavan
Character Nature: Immortal
Character birthdate:: Around 1100B.C.
Character place of birth: Southern Ireland (Area modernly known as West County Cork)
Personality: His youth is the first thing about Cavan that strikes most people, and to go with it he's got a sunny, cheerful disposition. He doesn't socialize much with his 'peers', although he's friendly toward them. There's an underlying quiet and calm that doesn't quite fit with his apparent age, and he's a little clueless about pop culture. As pleasant as he is toward everyone, he generally keeps to himself.
With other immortals he rarely makes friends, but he never starts a fight, and will politely try to avoid them. If pressed, though, he's very capable of finishing a fight, and he does not cheat.
Appearance: Cavan is about 5'1" with a slight build to match. He took his first death around the age of 17 and it shows, although he tends to pass himself off a a little older. Due to his inability to grow any facial hair to speak of, he usually can't pass for anything over 20 though. He has pale skin, pale blonde hair, and dark brown eyes.
Brief character History: First records of Cavan put him living with druids in Ireland, and there is rumor his first death was as a ritual sacrifice, yet he continued to live with them for many decades. Eventually he left his people to travel through Europe and down into the Middle East, exploring Egypt and Byzantium. Through the crusades he stayed in the East and at least ideologically stood against the invaders. Only after the last of the crusades did he return to Europe. Cavan traveled through Europe until he was caught in the frenzy of the Spanish Inquisition. On his escape (through dying) he fled north to recover, then East by way of the sea to India. He remained in that area at least a century. In the latter half of his life he has spent much of his time in monasteries, or more recently at colleges. His excessive time may mislead other immortals to think he's a poor fighter, but his motivations are learning and knowledge, not avoidance of the Game.
Abilities: He is a research specialist, speaks many languages, and has held onto a lot of Druidic lore lost to the world at large. He's also very fast with a sword.

Who they know/who knows them: It's plausible he may have known Darius, but he has few friendships among immortals.
